“When I was a little girl, I saw nurses come to my community to help people. I told myself: ‘I want to be a nurse too—to help my people.’” —Silvia María
In the rural hills of Nicaragua, far from the nearest health center, Silvia María wakes before dawn. By 6 a.m., she’s already on the only bus leaving her small community of La Consulta, heading to her nursing classes in Somotillo. Her journey is long and exhausting—especially during the rainy season when rivers overflow. On those days, she carries extra clothes to change into after swimming across a swollen river just to make it to class.
A Journey Fueled by Determination (and Just One Bus)
Now in her fourth year of nursing school, Silvia is one of the young women empowered by the Seeds of Hope Scholarship Program, an initiative by Amos Health and Hope that gives students in remote communities the opportunity to pursue medical careers. These young scholars don’t just study for their own futures—they do it to serve their communities, many of which have no doctor or nurse nearby.
Silvia’s determination is a testament to the spirit of Seeds of Hope. Despite the daily obstacles—physical exhaustion, long distances, and challenging weather—she remains steadfast. “Sometimes I wake up without the strength to start the journey,” Silvia shares, “but God gives me the strength. I want to make my parents proud—and honor the kind hearts who made this scholarship possible.”
