MARÍA PAIZ:
I am 18 years old and have been participating in AMOS’ Youth Empowerment Group in the community of Nejapa for three years. This group has impacted my life and the lives of so many other youth. Before getting involved with AMOS, I always avoided social events and activities. I was shy and could not express myself much. But not anymore.
Thanks to what I’ve learned in our lessons and from the people I’ve met at AMOS, today, I am a better person.
Now, I lead computer classes in the AMOS Cyberbox for the youth and the AMOS Health Educators so they can have better futures and more opportunities. When they ask me questions in their lessons, I feel my responsibility is to teach them a little bit more, explain things more clearly, and make the content simpler so they can not only learn, but be empowered to excel in what they’re learning.
I think the values of companionship, support, respect, communication, and social responsibility flow through the work I carry out with AMOS. My biggest dream is that my community will be recognized throughout Nicaragua for having great human values. I want our teen pregnancy rates to decrease. I want other people to see how AMOS has made enormous efforts to improve the health and well-being of all the people in my community.
AMOS has helped other young people in the same way they’ve helped me, by improving their communication with their families, improving their school performance, and more. As a young leader, I help out by recruiting more young people to join the Youth Empowerment group to be empowered, too.
To all of AMOS’ supporters: thank you and God bless you. I hope l can meet you all someday. All these programs are possible because of you. I am a leader, thanks to you.
