For nearly 40 years, Jesús García has served his village with one simple motivation: love for his neighbors.
At just 15 years old, Jesús became a community health volunteer. Today, at 54, he continues that same mission, this time alongside his wife, Elizabeth Castro, a former midwife, their daughter, and even their granddaughter.
Together, this month, they participated in a family planning talk at the health post in La Brisa, a rural village in Rancho Grande. Also joining them was Reyna, who is just beginning her own journey as a community health volunteer, carrying forward a legacy of service that spans generations.
“My work in my village is helping with vaccination campaigns, teaching about family planning, testing for malaria, and caring for children,” Jesús shared. “This has been my way of serving my people from the heart.”
For Jesús and Elizabeth, education starts early. They believe children and adolescents deserve access to accurate health information so they can make informed decisions as they grow.
“When a child’s mind is still open, they have the ability to keep learning and learning,” Jesús said.
That belief extends into their own home, where they have taught their daughters about reproductive health and the importance of making informed choices. Their example reminds us that healthier communities are also built through conversations.
