Johana is 45 years old and lives in the community of Fila Grande, in Matagalpa.
AMOS has been working alongside this community for years. In fact, late Dr. Gustavo Parajón (AMOS co-founder) started working with them in an AMOS predecessor organization.
A couple of weeks ago, when we visited Johana at her home, she shared with us about her experience with disease, and the hope and comfort that having a Health Promoter in her community brings to her and her family.
Johana shares: “I live here with my youngest child (a boy of 18), my daughter, my son-in-law, and my granddaughter. My husband passed away nine years ago, so all I have is my children.”
“Fila Grande is a rural community with several families and inhabitants. This is a large community. Because of that, the need for medical care is highly important. Emergencies can happen at any moment. Petronilo (Health Promoter) lives in the community and has always had a love for serving others.”
“Without the help of Petronilo and without the resources he has at the community clinic, we would have to travel to El Jobo (nearest town), which is 5 miles from here. And, if the health center at El Jobo is closed, that would mean taking a bus to Matiguas (nearest city).”
“I remember when I was sick with a suspected case of COVID last year. Petronilo helped me during that time. He would come to my house and bring me the treatment. [Petronilo coordinated with the Ministry of Health local authorities to pick up the treatment and deliver it to the patient]. He was also regularly checking my blood pressure, blood oxygen level, and heart rate.”
“I give thanks to God because He has enlightened Petronilo, He has given him intelligence and wisdom to help us with our health.”
“Please keep your support to Petronilo. He is a person who gives his time to the community, not everyone does that. He takes the time to see the patients, he is kind and cares about the needs of the community.”
Your ongoing support is helping Petronilo get the training, medicines, and support he needs to continue serving vulnerable families in the community of Fila Grande. You are helping him prevent disease and save lives!
